Hi, I'm Adam. I built this for the buyer I used to be.

I've owned cars I loved: a black 944 on BBS wheels when I lived in Malaysia, a 981 Boxster S, a BMW M340i and two Audi TTs. And I've been caught out, twice. I once bought a car expecting to pay £195 a year in road tax and ended up paying £620, because it fell into the luxury car rate. With one of the TTs, the car advert listed park assist and a reversing camera. It had the park assist. It didn't have the camera. I trusted the advert spec at face value and these are the kind of mistakes this service is there to help you avoid.

Chequered Past does that looking for you. Give us the registration. We read the official records: the DVLA record, the full MOT history, finance and write-off markers, and a valuation. Then we tell you plainly what we found and what we couldn't check.

How I run it

• If we didn't check something, the check says Not checked. It never says Clear.
• Facts come from official records. We don't guess.
• Your check is on screen in seconds. I read every one myself after it goes out, and if I spot a mistake, I'll get in touch.
• If something in your check looks wrong, email me and I'll look at it myself.

Who's behind it

Chequered Past is me, Adam Cooper. Before this I spent six and a half years at InMotion Ventures, Jaguar Land Rover's venture arm, and I've run partnerships for car rental and car subscription businesses. It's a small, independent UK company, and I'd rather you trusted it because it tells you the truth about a car than because it looks big.
