The Used Ferrari Buying Guide
Buying a used Ferrari is not like buying a fast car. It is closer to buying an asset with a service schedule attached. Two cars of the same model and year, with similar mileage, can be tens of thousands of pounds apart on history and original specification alone, and almost none of that gap is visible in a photograph.
This guide explains what genuinely matters when buying a used Ferrari, which models we cover, and how a Chequered Past history check tells you what the car advert will not.
Why a used Ferrari needs more scrutiny, not less
Three things drive Ferrari values in a way they do not on most performance cars.
Original specification. Ferrari’s factory options were extensive and expensive, and they were ordered individually rather than in packages. Carbon interior and exterior items, upgraded seats, the front suspension lifter, premium audio and wheel choices were all separately priced, and their presence or absence moves the value of the car materially. A well-optioned car and a base car look almost the same in a car advert and are not the same car.
Service history. These are cars with demanding, expensive maintenance schedules, where a single deferred major service can cost more than a year of depreciation. A folder of receipts tells you what was paid for. It does not tell you what was skipped, and the gap between the two is where the money hides.
Provenance. Owner count, main dealer or recognised specialist history, and a clean structural record matter more here than on almost any other kind of car, because the buyer pool cares about them and prices accordingly.
A pre-purchase check is not about distrust. It is about paying the right price for the right car, with your eyes open.
The Ferrari models we cover
We provide pre-purchase analysis across Ferrari’s modern range, from the F355 onwards. Pick your model for the detailed guide:
- Ferrari 488, the turbocharged mid-engined V8 that replaced the 458, including the Spider and the Pista.
- Ferrari California, the folding hardtop front-engined V8, and for many buyers the accessible way into Ferrari ownership.
- Ferrari F430, the last of the naturally aspirated small-block era before the 458, including the 430 Scuderia.
- Ferrari 296, the V6 plug-in hybrid that reset what a junior Ferrari is, in GTB and GTS form.
- Ferrari Roma, the front-engined V8 grand tourer, in coupé and Spider form.
We cover considerably more than these five, including the 458, F8, SF90, 812, Portofino, 599, F12, FF, GTC4Lusso, Purosangue and 12Cilindri. Pre-F355 classics are outside this guide. (The history check runs on any UK car.)
What we check on every Ferrari
Every Chequered Past history check covers the same ground:
- the factory spec;
- MOT and mileage history;
- finance, stolen and write-off markers;
- keepers;
- the market value.
If we couldn’t check something, the check says so.
How it works
Give us the registration, and we return a clear, plain-English check on that specific car, on screen in seconds. No jargon, no upsell, just the picture you need to negotiate hard or walk away with confidence.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the car’s registration? Yes. The free check and the £10 vehicle history check both run on the registration.
Which used Ferrari should I buy? Whichever suits you. But on a Ferrari more than most cars, the individual car’s history and original specification matter more than the model, and that is what we check.
