Porsche History Check
A history check is the part of buying a used car you can do before you go anywhere, and on a high-value, finance-heavy market like used Porsches, it’s the part most worth doing. It tells you whether the car can be sold to you cleanly, and whether its recorded past matches the story you’re being told.
What a history check covers
- Outstanding finance: the single most important one. If there’s money still owed against the car, it isn’t the seller’s to sell free and clear, and you can inherit the problem.
- Stolen marker: whether the car is recorded as stolen on the police database.
- Write-off / accident markers: whether it’s been recorded as damaged or written off, and in which category. A recorded repair isn’t always a deal-breaker, but you must know it’s there.
- Mileage consistency: whether the recorded mileage moves in a straight line over time, or jumps in a way that needs explaining.
- Plate changes: whether the car has worn other registrations, which can be perfectly innocent or worth a second look.
Why a generic check isn’t enough for a Porsche
A standard history check treats a Porsche like any other car. It isn’t one. On a Porsche, two otherwise-identical cars can be worth thousands apart on specification alone, and the options a seller claims are not always the options the car actually has. The vehicle history check includes the equipment this car left the factory with, from the manufacturer’s build record for this registration.
The honest limit
A history check confirms the records. It does not confirm the condition of the car in front of you: that needs a physical inspection. We’re always clear about which is which: the history check is what you do first, to decide whether a car is even worth viewing. (See history check vs physical inspection.)

Frequently asked questions
Is a Porsche history check different from an HPI check? It covers the same core provenance (finance, stolen, write-off, mileage).
What do I need? The registration.
Does a clean history mean the car is fine? It means the paperwork checks out, which is essential, but separate from the car’s physical condition. A clean history plus a specialist inspection is the combination you want.
Which Porsches do you cover? Any Porsche with a UK registration.
